The United States is “concerned” about religious freedoms in France

Washington – (AFP):

On Tuesday, the US envoy on religious freedom expressed his concern about France, warning of the strict measures taken by President Emmanuel Macron in targeting “Islamist extremism.”

“It is clear that I am concerned about what is happening in France,” Ambassador Sam Brownback told reporters when asked about Macron’s initiative. “When the repression becomes severe, the situation could deteriorate.”

Paris’s relationship with Muslims has witnessed tensions in recent months, against the backdrop of re-publication of cartoons offensive to the Prophet Muhammad, and statements by French President Emmanuel Macron about what he described as “Islamist extremism” sparked widespread anger among Muslims and criticism across the world.
