France .. Parliament ratifies the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO

The French Parliament ratified the protocols for the accession of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) by a vote in the National Assembly.

The approval came by 209 votes to 46, after the historic decision of these two countries to abandon neutrality due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

However, Sweden and Finland need the endorsement of the organization’s 30 member states to benefit from the protection provided by Article 5 of the NATO Mutual Defense Charter in the event of an attack.

Turkey threatens to “freeze” the operation, accusing the two Scandinavian countries of sympathy with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and its allies, whom it considers “terrorist organizations.”

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said France was joining “the 20 allied countries that have ratified the two protocols”.

Colonna praised the “historic and important decision” of Sweden and Finland, whose “neutrality has so far been a fundamental principle”.
