Led to the first leg on home soil by PSG at 1-4 in the round of 16 of the 2020-2021 Champions League, FC Barcelona must play big this Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at the Parc des Princes to hope to win its second remontada against the Parisians.
A victim of remontada in recent years, Barça also has a long list of Remontada. Discover the top 5 of FC Barcelona’s remontada in the Champions League.
5. Barcelona 3-1 Chelsea (18 April 2000)
This double confrontation with Chelsea is one of the first reversals in Barca’s history. Never before had the Spanish club managed to recover more than two goals in the European Cup. 3-1 in the first leg despite Luis Figo’s goal in the second half, the Catalans surprised a first in the return leg. Barca was under Louis van Gaal; the Catalans managed to win 5-1 at the Nou Camp.
4. Barcelona 4-0 AC Milan (12 March 2013)
Although the Barcelona players were finally unable to complete the adventure, the double showdown with AC Milan will have marked this 2012-2013 edition. The Milanese have already eliminated the Champions League’s two-time winner (2009, 2011) after a perfect match at San Siro following Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng (2-0). A transparent Messi in the first leg turns into a real warrior with a double in the return match. Barca eventually won at 4-0 on their home turf.
3. AS Rome 3-0 Barcelona (10 April 2018)
A year after the comeback against Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona crossed paths with AS Roma in the Champions League’s quarter-finals. The first confrontation gives its first truths. In the first leg, four goals to 1, Barcelona fell heavily in the return match against the Italians, four goals to 1.
2. Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (7 May 2019)
Barcelona reached the quarter-finals by eliminating Manchester United and got the last four of the competition. Roma’s trauma last season already seems far behind them, but that is underestimating Liverpool, a club capable of incredible feats in its history. Winner in the first leg (3-0), FC Barcelona sinks in the return match at Anfield (4 -0), the list of the remontada grows for Messi and his team-mates.
1. Barcelona 6-1 PSG (8 March 2017)
March 8, 2017, a date forever etched in the minds of Catalan fans. Never before has any team managed to score four goals in the Champions League. Parisians would have done well without such a scenario. Yet, no one would have predicted such a remontada. Unai Emery and his players make it the hardest to go by exploding an amorphous Barça, without ideas and conviction (4-0). But in the return leg, Leo Messi and his team-mates created the feat by winning six goals to 1 at the Nou Camp. It was one of the greatest remontada in the history of football.
This Wednesday night, FC Barcelona will try to achieve the same performance of 2017 against the Parisians, except the snag is that this year PSG has different players from the remontada of 2017. A wonderful evening awaits football lovers this Wednesday night…
