Today, Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said that his country has three billion dollars of its funds frozen in Japanese banks, calling on the latter not to implement the United States’ decisions against Iran.

In an interview with Japanese “Kyodo News,” Zarif expressed his hope that “Japan and Europe will convince the United States to lift economic sanctions on Iran,” while he called on Japan “to refrain from implementing Washington’s illegal decisions against Tehran,” stressing “the need to release Iranian assets frozen in Japan due to US sanctions ”.

According to Zarif, “Iran’s frozen assets in Japan and South Korea are close to $ 10 billion, and Japan’s share is estimated at less than $ 3 billion.”

Tehran estimates that its funds withheld abroad are about 100 billion dollars, of which 35 billion are in European banks, due to the withdrawal of the administration of former US President Donald Trump from the nuclear deal in May 2018.

In early February, Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu said that his country was ready to help the United States and Iran to return to the 2015 nuclear deal.

The minister added that “Japan supports the nuclear agreement and strengthens the disarmament and stability regime in the Middle East,” expressing his hope that “Iran will be fully committed to the nuclear agreement, and that the United States will return to it,” noting that “Japan wants to make active diplomatic efforts between the two countries. Through its relationship with the United States and its long-standing friendship with Iran. ”
