A press report revealed, today, Wednesday, that Manchester City has not lost hope in signing Lionel Messi, Barcelona’s captain, next summer.
Messi’s contract with Barcelona expires at the end of this season, and he has the right to sign any other club, knowing that Manchester City tried to join him last summer, when he wanted to leave. Still, Barca clung to obtaining the entire penalty clause (700 million euros).
At the same time, Messi’s name has been linked to a move to Paris Saint-Germain. His colleague and girlfriend Neymar da Silva, his compatriots Angel Di Maria, and Mauricio Pochettino, the team’s coach, are based.
According to the global network “ESPN,” Manchester City plans to start negotiations to include Messi in March or April, indicating that the club’s total salaries are lower than their counterpart in Paris Saint-Germain, giving City the preference for joining him.
A source from Manchester City told the network: “Paris Saint-Germain is following a wrong approach to trying to sign Messi, Leo does not like all the noise in the media.”
Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has already expressed his anger after the statement by Angel Di Maria, the star of Paris Saint-Germain, in which he said: “There is a great opportunity to include Messi, we must be calm and let things develop.”
Koeman commented, “It is disrespectful, it is wrong to say something like this because it would increase the sensitivity of the two teams’ match in the Champions League.”
He added: “I do not think it is respectful of Barcelona to talk about players in its ranks who talk about Leo a lot. He is a Barca player, and we have two matches together in less than a month.”
Barca supporters are counting on Barcelona’s new president, who will be elected on March 7, to keep Messi on.
