Reuters reported that many Republican officials who served in President George W. Bush’s administration decided to leave the party, describing it as “Trump’s sect.”
According to “Reuters,” the mass emigration is caused by the party’s unwillingness to hold former President Donald Trump accountable for the January 6 Capitol attack.
These officials said they had hoped Trump’s defeat would lead party leaders to denounce his unfounded claims that the presidential election had been stolen.
But with most Republicans sticking to Trump, those officials say they no longer recognize the party.
According to dozens of former Bush administration officials, some have expired, while a few have resigned from the party.
“The Republican Party as I knew it is no longer there. I’ll call it the Trump sect,” said Jimmy Gurule, Under-Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence in the Bush administration.
