China has imposed sanctions on 28 people and US officials, including former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington is imposing visa restrictions on Chinese Communist Party officials believed to be responsible for undermining freedoms in Hong Kong.

Pompeo said the sanctions had targeted “current and former” party officials.

He said the move came after President Donald Trump pledged to punish Beijing over a proposed security law that could undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy.

China said the US decision was a “mistake” that should be withdrawn.

It comes just days before the Chinese Parliament meets.

The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress discusses the new law in its meeting on Sunday.

China has proposed security legislation that would criminalize Beijing’s authority in Hong Kong. You could also see China installing its own security devices in the region for the first time.

The move sparked a new wave of anti-mainland protests in Hong Kong.
