China breaks world record in hydroelectric power generation

The Chinese newspaper “People” reported that the Three Gorges Dam hydroelectric power plant on the Yangtze River in China generated 111.8 billion kilowatt-hours in 2020, confirming a new world record.

The plant broke the previous world record for hydropower generation of 103.098 billion kWh set by the Brazilian Itaipu plant in 2016.

The clean energy generated by the Chinese plant in 2020 saved about 34.39 million tons of regular coal and prevented carbon dioxide emissions by 94.02 million tons.

The station chief, Chen Hui, said the new world record is of great significance given the novel coronavirus disease and floods in the Yangtze River Basin in 2020.
