Central Africa: Rebels storm the town of Bangassou

Reuters quoted its sources as saying that rebel fighters in Central Africa stormed Bangassou, famous for its diamond polishing, and occupied areas there, a day before the presidential elections’ results were announced.

The sources told “Reuters”: After hours of fighting, the fighters of the Alliance of Patriots for Change entered Bangassou, on the southern border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but it was not clear to what extent they had controlled the town.

She added, “The army soldiers took shelter in a base belonging to the United Nations mission in Bangassou.”

An army spokesman confirmed that he had no information about the situation in Bangassou and had not yet been able to contact a spokesperson for the UN mission for comment.

The United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic said that “at least five rebels were killed and two soldiers were wounded in clashes in Bangassou, which is located on the southern border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”
