On Wednesday, the Vatican said Pope Francis mentioned soccer legend and fellow Argentine Diego Maradona with affection, adding that he prays for him.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said, “The Pope was informed of the death of Diego Maradona. He remembers the times he met him in recent years with affection, and he remembers him in his prayers as he did in the past days when he learned of his condition.”
Maradona, who passed away today at his home in Argentina after a heart attack, met the Pope several times in the Vatican after Francis was elected in 2013 as the first Latin American Pope.
Francis is a big fan of the Buenos Aires San Lorenzo soccer team.
